Dr. Amit Goswami's
Creative Evolution

Is there any evidence for the existence of a unitive Consciousness? And, if so, is there also scientific evidence that it is the force behind the creation of new species?

"proof" is good only for whiskey

“Proof” is a slippery philosophical concept and, strictly speaking, exists only in the area of Aristotle’s deductive syllogisms and mathematical proofs, and these become dispositive only if the antecedent premise is accepted.

But we won’t bother with that right now. Physicist Tom Campbell had a good line on this, to the effect: Proof is something that might be applied to the quality of whiskey, but anything else is doubtful. Instead, we should talk about evidence, its preponderance and weight.

Proof is slippery because nothing is final. There is no last word. We never have all the facts. There’s ever more to come. And anyone, even oneself, can always come up with an objection to anything.

That’s why we need to talk about the preponderance of evidence and probabilities.

I present all this – which might be offered as prelude to many discussions – concerning the arguments on the primacy of Consciousness: it has the weight of the evidence on its side.

What scientific evidence do we have that there is such a thing as an overarching, unitive Consciousness, linking all persons?

Dr. Goswami speaks of an experiment by Grinberg and Zylerbaum; and then replicated by others. Two people meditated together, with the intention of maintaining mental contact later when separated.

Then, each is placed in a Faraday Cage, a box that blocked all electro-magnetic signals. The subjects are connected to separate EEG machines to record brain-waves. One of the subjects is shown a light flash, which is recorded by the EEG. Amazingly, the other subject also records the EEG event, even though the latter is not shown any light flashes.

Goswami: “If electrical potential can be transferred from one brain to another without any signal, [then] a nonlocal connection must exist between them. This nonlocal connection is their unitive quantum consciousness.”

Editor’s note: “nonlocal” means (roughly) beyond normal barriers of space, time, and the speed of light.

What scientific evidence do we have that a Universal Consciousness has collapsed quantum possibility waves to produce new species?

Later articles will provide results of recent findings concerning “the double-slit experiment” which requires as observing consciousness to produce a particle of matter.

Further, the Cambrian Explosion represents a massive shift upwards in complexity and order. Not only did this occur within a relatively short period of time, geologically speaking -- meaning, there wasn't enough time for Darwinism's gradualism to work its purported magic -- but, under normal circumstances, this could not happen for another reason as the universe is suffering under a tendency toward disorder via the principle of entropy.

it's not possible to overcome entropy, in a sustained and substantive way, without an injection of extra energy from an outside source

In other words, if we find a huge injection of complexity and order into the bio-system of planet Earth, then we are justified in asking, where did this extra energy come from that allowed for the circumvention of entropy?

A reasonable answer, in light of other supporting evidence, is that Universal Consciousness supplied the necessary energy to overcome the pull toward disorder that is entropy.
